Hey everyone! Great news on my end. I get to work on a sample paid project next week for a possible contract job. I’m very excited. I might have been dancing around the house. Maybe.
Again, my friend and I have a table at Anime Milwaukee. Come check out Heroes of Nowhere. We’ll be happy to talk to you!
On a different note, I’ve been working through character profiles for some of my more prominent/important characters. Its a great way of getting to know them. Its like a ref sheet, but written! Aria was the first character I worked through. I don’t feel as bad about what end up doing to her at the end of Opus Aria anymore. Once Darien strolled into the Opus Universe, I realized that Aria has one of the happier stories. Isn’t that horrible? So every once and awhile I will post a character profile. Because its very fun to make these profiles.
Oh yeah, this is insanely long.
Full name: Aria Brayton
Pronunciation: Ah-ree-a Bray-ton
Nickname(s) or Alias: Aria, Ari, Opus 1
Species: enhanced human/Opus
Age: 22-24 (I’m still deciding on how old I should make her)
Birthday: November 15th (Scorpio)
Sexuality: Straight, for the most part
Religion: most religions would disagree with her profession.
City or town of birth: Apple Grove, Minnesota, USA
Currently lives: travels
Languages spoken: English
Native language: English
Relationship Status: Due to the nature of her existence, Aria mainly has one night stands.
Height: 5ft 9
Weight: 115 lbs (+/- 5-10 lbs, it really depends on how much food she’s able to get her hands on)
Figure/build: Aria is emaciated due to the modifications to her body, an Opus requires far more food than she actually consumes. However, she has a lean muscular build from dancing before Project Maestro and then the extensive martial arts training each Opus was put through. While athletic, she maintains a “feminine” figure, meaning that she has larger bust and hips than her waist.
Hair colour: Pink is her favorite, but her natural color is brown.
Hairstyle: Prefered is long, nearly to her waist.
Eye colour: blue green, closer to green.
Skin/fur/etc colour: pale
Scars/distinguishing marks: As Aria has worked as a high class assassin, she has numerous scars from jobs gone wrong. The most noticible is one that starts at her left shoulder and ends between her breasts. The other highly noticeable one is on her right leg, from the back of her knee to midway through her calf. There’s also the implantation scar on the back of her neck (a couple inches long).
CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES
Preferred style of clothing: Black with bright colors, especially blues and greens (she wears quite a deal of pink when her hair isn’t pink). She has bright blue goggles that protect her eyes from the scorched sky. She has a black trench coat that falls to her knees. She also wears a pair of boots that convert into electric rollerblades – they are black and blue in coloration. Always tight clothing that has movement (yes, that is possible. stretchy clothing!)
Frequently worn jewelery: Jewelery was frowned upon at Project Maestro, after having an earring ripped out of her ear during a fight she’s stopped wearing them.
Frequently worn accessories: Trenchcoat and boots
Drug User? Aria prefers to keep her mind clear when fighting. A drink every now and then is one thing, but getting into serious drugs? nope
Addictions: Not really.
Any physical ailments/illnesses/disabilities/mental conditions: Aria is an Opus. While she can handle a lot of pain and can fight off most diseases, being an Opus has weaknesses. Her blood sugar drops quickly due to the fact that there are two consciousness in her mind. It also has made her metabolism hyperactive. To maintain a healthy weight, she has to consume close to 6000 calories a day. Lets just say she doesn’t.
Any medication regularly taken: None. She will take medicine when it is recommended, but otherwise avoids it.
At some point she contracts Scorched Atmosphere (Scorched Atmo for short). While she is one of the few people who survives due to finding Miranda, her healer friend, it has permanently damaged her lungs.
Personality: Aria is highly intelligent, its one of the main reasons that she was invited to test into Project Maestro. Beyond that, she is independent of anyone except Piano, her AI. Her mind adapts quickly to the situation at hand, but she would rather think something through before jumping into action.
Aria is quite stubborn. This has gotten her in a lot of trouble with authority figures. One might say she has an issue with authority, its more that she has an issue with her direct superior, Stratton.
She is very sure of herself. She knows that she is well-trained and she knows that her dance experience makes her a deadly opponent. She is confident to the point of recklessness at times and it has gotten her more than a few scars and injuries.
This is complemented by the personality of her AI, Piano. Piano is cautious. While Aria thinks things through, she is also over-confident, Piano tempers this by reminding her of her own mortality and that his life is connected to hers.
Thinking of one of them means you think of the other.
Likes: dancing (especially ballet), relaxation, good food (especially proteins), keeping her loved ones safe, reading, sex, cats, dogs, children
Dislikes: being used, dealing with Stratton, medical examinations, dealing with Keiran, cockiness (even her own), body odor, bad hygeine
Strengths: Aria is independent. This allows her to function as an Opus without any major problems as an Opus is alone, save for their AI, most of the time. Aria and Piano meshed together better than Project Maestro could have hoped. They work together near flawlessly. They excel in stealth work and are able to infiltrate buildings with high levels security.
Weaknesses: Aria’s confidence. At times she goes into battle thinking that she will come out unscathed, often enough she succeeds, however, there have been enough times that have seriously injured her.
Her relationship with Stratton. He has always acted differently around her than the other Opera ← plural for Opus. It has driven her up the wall and made her question exactly why he would take a special interest in her. As such, he has the ability to throw her off her game more than anyone.
Fears/phobias: losing Piano.
Favourite colour: turquoise
Hobbies: dance of all forms but especially ballet, reading anything she could get her hands on, learning, writing, and philosophy.
Taste in music: She tends to enjoy classical music the most because of her dance background. She especially loves Tchaikovsky and wishes that she had been able to dance the lead in his ballets.
Omnivore/Carnivore/Herbivore: omnivore. She eats meat and vegetables. Food is hard for her to afford, so she takes what she can get.
Favourite food: mashed potatoes
Favourite drinks: various fruit juices. She especially loves grape juice.
Disliked food: She doesn’t like scallops very much, but that’s okay, they’re very expensive and hard to find.
Disliked drinks: gin
HOUSE AND HOME
Describe the character’s house/home: We’ll go with Project Maestro since after that she doesn’t live in any particular ‘home’, unless you count abandoned warehouses and seedy hotels.
Aria lives in the Opus wing of Project Maestro. It isn’t exactly warm and cuddly. The main hallway, where all the personal rooms are, is long and narrow with gray walls and floor. When Aria ran away, there were six Opera and thus, six rooms. Her room has warm yellow walls, a blue threadbare carpet, and bed that is utilitarian at best.
The wing contains the housing for the Opera, a training facility that resembles a dojo with a weight room attached to it, a cafeteria, a few interrogation rooms, isolation, and Stratton’s office.
The training facility has a black padded floor for martial arts training. Unlike other training facilities, it does not smell of dried sweat. There are a few heavy bags hanging from the ceiling. The weight room has a variety of weight equipment as well as a few cardio machines.
The cafeteria was like a school’s cafeteria on crack. There were a few extra tables – there were many guards assigned to the Opus wing and they, of course, took their meals in the Opus wing cafeteria. The walls were an inviting shade of brown with cream accents. There was a line where people got their food. The tables were made of nice wood instead of metals. It was cozy.
The interrogation rooms were all the same. Black walls, a metal table with two metal chairs, one on each side of the table, and a single light hanging from the ceiling. Cliched but effective.
Isolation was a different story. The walls were white and padded. The floor soft enough to act as a bed. The thing worth of note was that the room managed to separate an Opus from their AI.
Stratton’s office. Lushly decorated. The desk was wooden and clearly aged. The chair is soft and cushioned. The carpet is a rich red and the walls a soft blue. There is a picture of a beautiful woman with long, pale blonde hair and a much younger Stratton sitting on the desk. There is always a bottle of whiskey sitting on the desk as well.
There were other areas of the Opus wing, but Aria was usually not able to remember what they looked like due to procedures and being put into a sleep.
Level of education: While Aria didn’t attend any formal school after the age of thirteen, she has the knowledge of someone who at least has a college degree. She was accepted into a prestigious arts school as well as Project Maestro.
Qualifications: pointe ballet, excellent writer, quick to learn.
Current job title and description: Assassin for Project Maestro. She is a highly skilled assassin, able to infiltrate and complete most missions with relative ease. You do what you’re told and everything is fine. Mainly is ordered to assassinate people who start to know “too much” about the United States government.
Name of employer: John Stratton / Project Maestro
Peaceful or aggressive attitude? That depends on the situation that she’s in. On a mission, Aria will be more likely to attack without question. If not on a mission, she is more likely to flee than engage in a fight. Needless killing should be avoided.
Fighting skills/techniques: Specialized martial arts training. Being a dancer made all of her martial arts moves graceful and difficult to read. Piano can see tells/things that Aria cannot see and aids her in any way possible. They work fluidly, as one.
Special skills/magical powers/etc: Aria is an enhanced human, an Opus. Piano gives her a great deal of stealth. An Opus is stronger, faster, and more resilient than a normal human.
Weapon of choice (if any): usually will fight without weapons. However, she is skilled with a knife and an energy gun.
Weaknesses in combat: An Opus is weak against Adepts. An Adept will always be able to know what an Opus will do in battle. Aria herself gets a little thrown if there are children in the mix. She hates hurting children.
Strengths in combat: She has fluid motions and is hard to read.
FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FOES
Parents names: Aria’s adoptive parents are Abigail and Robert Brayton. They adopted both Aria and her sister Melody from a couple that were in a difficult situation with the government and weren’t able to keep their children. They are kind people who aren’t able to have children on their own – they are both infertile. Aria isn’t aware that she is adopted. Neither is Melody. After they are accepted into Project Maestro, they never see their parents again.
Aria’s real parents are named John Stratton and Darien Marcellus. Both work in the government/military and want only the best for their children – even if it means that their children will never know who their real parents are. Stratton, of course, takes a special interest in both Aria and Melody. He is proud of his children and their accomplishments, but is ashamed that the only way he can know his children is by making them kill. Darien has visited them a few times, but can barely look at them without crying.
Siblings? Melody. She is two years younger than Aria. They are almost identical in appearance, except that Aria is two inches taller and quite a bit thinner. This is because Melody never ran away from Project Maestro and has been well-fed the entire time.
Other Important Relatives: None
Partner/Spouse: Aria has had various one night stands since she left Project Maestro, much to the chagrin of Piano. The one and only person Aria can trust is Piano. They have a very intimate relationship in means that he can hear most of her thoughts. While alive, Piano is the closest thing to a real relationship she can get. Trust and love are things that do not come to an Opus easily.
Once Aria dies (in some way), she continues on in another realm, dimension, what have you. It is the realm of AI. It allows her to love Piano in person.
Children: None. Aria was sterilized.
Best Friend: Piano would be the closest to her. If we’re going for tangible people, that would be Jinto, Opus 2.
Pets: Nope. I’m sure she would love to have a dog or cat, though.
Enemies? Oh dear. Most of them are dead. Once she left Project Maestro, they became her enemy. They alternate from honestly trying to bring her back in to lulling her into a false sense of security. Fugue, Project Maestro’s newest creation, is hunting down rogue Opera without the authorization from Stratton.
Describe their childhood (newborn – age 10):
Aria was born to Darien and John and given to Abigail and Robert when she was about a month old. Her intelligence started to show when she was young and her parents encouraged it. She starting dancing around the age of four. She and Melody excelled at dance.
Describe their teenage years (11 – 19):
When Aria was 11 she was made prima ballerina of her local dance company, she had exceptional talent. When she was thirteen, she sat the exam that would get her accepted into Project Maestro, the youngest (likely at the urging of John Stratton). She was also accepted into a prestigious dance school. She and her parents decided that her education was more important than her dance career at that point and she was ‘enrolled’ in Project Maestro.
When she first started at Project Maestro, everything was wonderful. They learned advanced sciences, literature, and strategy. Aria was an exemplary student and Stratton allowed her to continue dancing. AIs were implanted under the guise of being ‘study helpers’. All Opera were active within 2-3 years.
As an active Opus, Aria killed countless emissaries and various other people who ‘knew too much’. At the age of 18-21 (depending on how old I make her), Aria runs away from Project Maestro with Light.
Describe their adult years (20+):
Aria is on the run from Project Maestro. She and Piano find a wanted poster hologram and panic. She goes to her friend Light, who had told her to never come by, ever, for help. While things go sour at first, Aria does manage to get his help, if only because the operatives are then alerted to Light’s position. They work together briefly before they are ambushed by a unit called Fugue and Light is taken back to Project Maestro.
Aria falls ill with Scorched Atmo and visits her friend Miranda, a healer. Miranda manages to halt the progress of the Scorched Atmo, but not fully cure her. Aria makes the difficult decision to return to Project Maestro of her own volition. Upon returning, she gets a few upgrades, speaks with Stratton, and finds out her younger sister is also an Opus.
She finds out that Fugue is the new project after the Opus Project was deemed a failure (too much freedom, blah blah blah). Fugue has no freedom, they are AI within a human body. She is ordered to hunt them down, which she does under her own terms. No killing. She finds Elegy and brings the girl back to Project Maestro, only to find that it had been a trap. She makes it to the Opus wing and finds that it has been attacked brutally. She finds Jinto trapped under rubble, saving his life. Fugue had escaped. She finds out Light has been killed.
Stratton sends her out on another mission once she has healed, only for it to be another trap. She makes it back to Project Maestro to find that Fugue has been contained in a single room. She takes them all on, without a weapon. She manages to take all but one out, Largo. Largo is an Adept. He easily bests her multiple times, but she manages to catch him off guard just once. She gets overconfident, attempts to leave and is killed.
She wakes up in a world very different than Earth without an AI. She is whole, uninjured, and safe. She is with Piano and able to love him.
I commend you if you made it this far!
