2017: a year of writing progress in review

Hey all! It’s been a crazy year in many ways and I’ve neglected this blog more than I should. I like doing this sort of thing, a year in review. Even if I haven’t been active on here, I’ve been really active with writing in general. And it’s nice to share what I’ve been up to.

2017 has been an incredibly productive year for me. After having so many setbacks in writing in the last couple years, this year was incredibly needed. Well, at least I perceived them as setbacks. I felt slow and sluggish in writing…like I was stuck. Now I don’t feel so stuck. I actually feel like I’m kind of successful. Less in the sense of “WOW I’M ROLLING IN MONEY” and more in the sense of “hey I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

Opus series

I finished the final book in the Opus series during 2017. Opus Requiem has been a labor of love. I started writing it back in 2009 when I finished the original draft of Opus Aria. Obviously it went through many changes since then. It took years to write it, not only because I was finishing up the prequels, but because how I wanted it playing out evolved through the years.

Finishing it was more emotionally trying than I thought it would be. Imagine that bittersweet feeling you get when you finish a good book and amplify it a lot. I wanted to get through the beta reading, second draft, and editing process in 2017 as well, but that wasn’t in the cards.

You can look forward to the final installment in the Opus series in 2018!

Unfading Daydream

Of the things I accomplished in 2017, I didn’t expect one of them to be a literary magazine of all things. It was something I toyed around with for years and years but never really knew how to get started. Or never really thought I could actually succeed. But we got things rolling and it only seems to be getting better and better. I’m delighted to be able to give speculative fiction authors a place to shine. I love reading the stories that come in.

Issue 3 will be coming out on January 1st, by the way. And the year 1 anthology will be out shortly! Submissions for Issue 4 will open on February 1st.

mana of silent sins

I don’t have much time left in 2017, but if I really work hard, I might finish all the outlines for mana. This has been an exciting and unique process since I’m working with a studio and there’s a lot more collaboration than I’m used to in my creative process. But I love it. It’s fun creating with others, and its really cool and uplifting that my ideas are interesting to other people.

We’re almost to the stage of me writing the actual routes. I’m really, really excited.

404 error: connection not found

I didn’t anticipate starting a second visual novel before I’d even finished the first. This one is a bit different, a little less intense on the story and more focusing on anxiety, isolation, and depression as well as how connections are formed through online communication.

This also led to us starting a visual novel studio.

Oops.

I’m really excited to be working on 404…and while I’m not as far in the routes as I had hoped to be at this point, I could make a big push and at least have over half done by the end of 2017.

Fanfiction

There’s too much to list here individually. I don’t remember what year I started writing fanfiction, but I really threw myself into it during 2016 and 2017. I have multiple long projects going on, one of which I’m not allowed to talk about because its for a fandom event.

I’m going to try and be better about my update schedules though. Sins of a Cybernetic Empire desperately needs an update, Liar Liar too. I’m hoping to make a bit of a buffer before Sins really starts updating again, though.

There’s a lot coming on this front.

new projects

I always have novel projects going, even outside of the Opus series. I often found myself needing breaks from that universe since I’ve worked in it so heavily since the start of my career. But I outlined so many things this year and have so many ideas to get through. It’s great. I’m really excited for my new projects. Some of them are staying in my comfort zone of cyberpunk, some are branching more into magic. We’ll where everything goes!

I also have a short story/novella/novelette in the works. I’m making decent progress on that, though its moving a little slower than my usual pace.

basically…

This year has been so busy in terms of writing. I might have been quiet on here, but I haven’t been sitting around doing nothing. Here’s to hoping 2018 will be just as productive!

Happy writing
~LL
